Crankworx 2009 Wrap Up!

August 22, 2009

Crankworx

So Crankworx 2009 is officially over and it was just fantastic catching all the action online.

Brian Lopes was really on form the whole weekend. On the first day he narrowly missed out on the Dual Slalom title to Kyle Strait, but he was on a winning streak after that by defending his Air Downhill title. It was followed by a win in the Canadian Open Enduro event, and he topped it off with another win in the Giant Slalom. Man he is fantastic, even for his age.

It was domination from down under in the Garbanzo Downhill. Justin Leov, the New Zealander riding for Trek World Racing took the win crossing the finish line below 14mins. This was followed by the two Aussies, Chris Kovarik and Sam Hill who came in 2nd and 3rd respectively. On the final day of Crankworx, Sam Hill took the Canadian Open Downhill title by roughly 8 seconds!

The slopestyle event was another epic one indeed. Although Greg Watts took the win, I think the main highlights were really watching Brendon Semenuk and Martin Soderstrom pull their tricks off so smoothly with such amazing style. I really felt that either one of them should have won. No doubt Greg Watts pulled a lot of sick tricks but when it comes to style I think that both Semenuk and Soderstrom would win hands down. But then again it’s a judged contest so what can you do right? It just comes down to what the judges would prefer. Big props to Martin Soderstrom for using some circa 2005 to 2006 Cove full suspension bike with a what seemed like a Fox Vanilla R shock to compete. I think this was one of his first major slopestyle events of the year, and I guess most of us are more familiar seeing him ride street and park. Last but not least the Volkswagen Best Trick contest was won by Andreu Lacondeguy with a 360 Flat Spin Superman!

Okay enough talking! Time for some videos!
