2010 UCI World Cup DH Round 4 – Champery, Switzerland

July 22, 2010

After about a months break, the next round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup DH starts this weekend in Champery, Switzerland!

We missed out on the previous DH and 4X rounds back in Leogang, Austria as we were busy with the Coast 2 Coast event, but thanks to freecaster we were able to watch the replay! Just a quick recap, the last round in Austria saw the riders on a brand new course, and just like in the first round in Maribor, it was raining all weekend. There were plenty of crashes in the finals, not surprising as some DH riders questioned the safety of the track during practice. Greg Minnar took the fastest time with a 4:05.65, with Gee Atherton just behind in 2nd, and Aaron Gwin in 3rd.

The 4X was also saw riders on a brand new course designed by Guido Tschugg that featured some interesting sections and gave the spectators plenty of action even in the wet conditions. In the finals, Jared Graves was up against 3 riders from the RSP 4 Cross Racing Team. But thanks to his incredible gate starts he was able to put the power down the first straight and maintained it all the way to the finish. This is Graves’ 3rd win in the 4X and it puts him in a very good spot to win the 2010 World Cup title.

David Graf took it for the Gates Nicolai Team, qualifying 3rd and finishing in 8th, his highest position yet. However, he had a really unfortunate incident in the B finals of the 4X. He somehow managed to dislocate his ankle while putting a wrong foot down and he had to be airlifted off to the hospital. Gladly though there is a high chance that he might make it back in time for the World Championships so we wish him and the rest of the Gates Nicolai Team all the best in the rest of the season!

Anyways back to Champery, eyes would have definitely be on Sam Hill after his legendary run in 2007, but unfortunately he’s still out due to an injury. The riders will be back after 3 years to the hell of a steep track that it is, with new improvements added in thanks to track builders Claudo Caluori, Ben Walker and company. The DH finals will be on Saturday, instead of the usual Sunday, so remember to catch it live on!
