Nicolai E-Boxx.

September 14, 2011

How many of you guys remember seeing this?

Well, after a year of further development it has turned into this stealthy (not to mention extremely sexy) bike that you see above.

Dubbed the ‘E-Boxx’, it is powered by a Bosch eBike motor system, with a battery mounted at the downtube. Rumour has it that the torque-sensing and power-matching assistance motor promises of much aid during long uphill climbs and fast descents. Two E-Boxx models were unveiled this year at Eurobike 2011, the Helius E-Boxx (black), and the ION E-Boxx (blue). Nicolai has said that they hope to make the E-Boxx and option for all of it’s frames in the future.

As far as weight goes, the ION E-Boxx pictured here weighs in at just over 26kg.

The motor ideally remains at the bottom bracket area to keep the centre of gravity low, as well as ensuring that the extra weight is centered and distributed evenly.

Having a motor on a mountain bike would allow riders to shuttle themselves to the top of their DH trail, not to mention access terrain that they probably wouldn’t have thought of. With the development of the Helius/ION E-Boxx, Nicolai has completely changed the way we look at electric bikes. We know now that they don’t just belong on cycling paths, but you could even be seeing them in your local trails in the near future. How cool is that?!

Trouble is – a few of those bikes on German trails and you will see the ban of ebikes offroad in a blink of an eyes. Extremely tempting, sexy? well yeah okay but I am afraid not good if you want to keep the trails open!
